Since no study assessing the toxicity of Reaction mass of bis(2-propylheptyl) hexanedioate and O6-[2,2-bis[[6-oxo-6-(2-propylheptoxy)hexanoyl]oxymethyl]butyl] O1-(2-propylheptyl) hexanedioate to aquatic microorganisms is available, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, a read-across to the source substance Bis(2-propylheptyl) adipate (940-510-9, DPHA) was conducted. The read across is justified since DPHA is the main constituent (80%) of the target substance. The high molecular weight (> 900 g/mole) and log Pow (> 10) of the TMP ester constituent indicate a much lower toxicity of this constituent compared to DPHA. Thus, the study result for the source substance is considered to adequately cover the aquatic toxicity of the whole multi-constituent substance.

The toxicity of Bis(2 -propylheptyl) hexanedioate to aquatic microorganisms was performed according to GLP and OECD guideline 209 using domestic activated sludge as inoculum (BASF 2014). Test substance concentrations between 62.5 and 1000 mg/L were tested. After 3h incubation time inhibition of respiration was recorded to be between 7 and -8% showing no monotone concentration response. Thus, the ECx calculation is not meaningful and the EC10 (3h) is assumed to be > 1000 mg/L. In addition, the inhibition control of the biodegradation test performed with the target substance showed no inhibitory effects of the test substance to aquatic microorganism. Based on these results Reaction mass of bis(2-propylheptyl) hexanedioate O6-[2,2 -bis[[6-oxo-6-(2 -propylheptoxy) hexanoy]oxymethyl]butyl]O1-(2-propylheptyl) hexanedioate is not considered to be harmful to aquatic microorganisms.
