Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

The biodegradation potential of the test item was tested in a BODIS Test for Insoluble Substances. The average degradation rate of the test item was 15.28 % after 28 d, therefore, the substance is considered as not readily biodegradable.

Additional information

A study was performed to assess the biodegradability of the test material according to the ISO 10708 guideline. There were three vessels per study group: a blank without test material; one with 0.0071 g of the test material (a ThOD of 20 mg/L); and one with 0.5 mL of sodium benzoate stock solution containing 25 mg/mL. The oxygen consumption rates of the blanks, the reference substance and the test material were compared, presenting the degradability of the test material. Test results were considered valid if the percentage degradation of the reference material had reached the level of 60% ThOD within 14 days and the total oxygen uptake in the blanks after the first week of the test was lower than 3 mg O2/L and in the following week not >/= 1 mg/L per week. Within 28 days a biodegradation rate of 15.28% was determined for the test material, which was rated as 'average' degradation. The reference substance achieved a 67.33% biodegradation rate after 14 days and all validity criteria of the test method were met.
