Materials and methods

Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: "The Registration for REACH of Natural Complex Substances used as Fragrance Ingredients" by EFFA/EFEO
Deviations:
no
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The boiling point of an essential oil is not a sharply defined characteristic because it is a mixture of substances in variable concentrations. Therefore the temperature at which the natural complex substance (NCS) begins to boil under normal atmospheric pressure shall be determined.
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
distillation method

Results and discussion

Boiling point
Boiling pt.:
72 °C
Decomposition:
no
Remarks on result:
other: Temperature at which first distillate was observed

Any other information on results incl. tables

The following observations were made:

 The sample started to boil at a bottom temperature of 120°C

 First distillate was obtained at (head temperature) 72°C

 Head temperature reached a plateau around : no plateau reached

 Bottom temperature continued to rise due to composition change.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The boiling point of Cinnamon bark oil is 72ºC.
Executive summary:

The boiling point of cinnamon bark oil was determined according to the methodology described in "The Registration for REACH of Natural Complex Substances used as Fragrance Ingredients" by EFFA/EFEO using the distillation method. The boiling point (temperature at which first distillate was obtained) was found to be 72ºC.
