Description of key information

Flammable upon ignition.
The substance has no pyrophoric properties and does not liberate flammable gases in contact with water.
The substance is not a self-reactive substance or mixture.
The substance is a self-heating substance or mixture.
The substance is not an organic peroxide.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
highly flammable

Additional information

In an UN N.1 Test the burning time was 16 to 21 s.

Based on chemical structure pyrophoric properties and flammability in contact with water are not to be expected.

In an UN N.5 Test the substance releases gas (alcohol) / water damp mixture but without spontaneous self-ignition.

The substance or mixture does not need to be classified as self-reactive as there are no chemical groups present in the molecule associated with explosive or self reactive properties.

In an UN N.4 Test the substance ignites in a 2.5 cm wired cube at 140 °C. This is supported to the GESTIS database where the test substance is also regarded as self heating.

The substance or mixture does not need to be classified as an organic peroxide as by definition based on their chemical structure the substance is no organic peroxide.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Dangerous Substance Directive (67/548/EEC)

Based on the study results, the molecular structure, the experience in handling and use and taking into account the provisions laid down in Directive 67/548/EEC, as amended for the 31st time in Directive 2009/2/EG, the substance needs to be classified as highly flammable solid F, R11. The test substance does not need to be classified as flammable in contact with water or as pyrophoric.

Classification, Labelling, and Packaging Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008

Based on the study results, the molecular structure, the experience in handling and use and taking into account the provisions laid down in Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, as amended for the sixth time in Regulation (EC) No 605/2014, the substance has to be classified as flammable solid cat. 1, H228 and self heating cat. 1, H251. The test substance does not need to be classified as flammable in contact with water, pyrophoric, self-reactive substance or organic peroxide.
