Additional information

The ready biodegradability of High oleic sunflower oil, maleated was assessed with the Manometric Respirometry Test according to OECD Guideline 301 F. High oleic sunflower oil, maleated was tested at a nominal concentration of 100 mg/L. The following biodegradation was determined at the end of the 28-d period: MSOHO (100 mg/L):14.3 % Sodium benzoate (100 mg/L):87.7 %. High oleic sunflower oil, maleated had no inhibitory effect on activated sludge microorganisms at the tested concentration of 100 mg/L. Since the pass value of > 60 % was not reached within 28 days High oleic sunflower oil, maleated cannot be considered to be readily biodegradable according to OECD guideline 301 F. However, the 10% level was passed at day 15 and steady increase of degradation was noted until end of the 28 day study period indicating an slow biodegradability of High oleic sunflower oil, maleated.

In a similar Manometric Respirometry Test according to OECD Guideline 301 F, Fatty acids, C14-18 and C16-18-unsatd., maleated was tested up to 200 mg/L in two runs. The test material attained a maximum mean level of biodegradation (based on the BOD:COD ratio) of 40% in Run 1 and 30% in Run 2. Because less than 60% degradation was achieved within the 10-day window Fatty acids, C14-18 and C16-18-unsatd could not be classified as readily biodegradable, however it can regarded as inherently biodegradable due to the degradation rate of >20%.

The biodegradation of glycerol was examined using industrial activated sludge and found to be almost completely degraded within 24 hours.

Although the data on the biodegradability of High oleic sunflower oil, maleated suggest some but slow biodegradation, the substance has to be regarded as not readily biodegradable.
