Reference
Endpoint:
viscosity
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
December 2009
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
study well documented, meets generally accepted scientific principles, acceptable for assessment
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
ASTM D-445 (Standard Test Method for Kinematic Viscosity of Transparent and Opaque Liquids (and Calculation of Dynamic Viscosity)
Principles of method if other than guideline:
This method covers the determination of the kinematic viscosity of liquid petroleum products, both transparent and opaque, by measuring the time of flow of a fixed volume of liquid at a given temperature through calibrated glass capillary instruments, using "gravity-flow." A procedure is given for a calculation of dynamic viscosities from measured kinematic viscosities
GLP compliance:
no
Type of method:
flow cup (static)
Temp.:
40°C
Parameter:
kinematic viscosity (in mm²/s)
Value:
>= 5.9 - <= 8.8
Remarks on result:
other: Typical value : 6.6
Conclusions:
The viscosity of the substance at 100°F (38.8ºC) varies between 5.9 and 8.8 with a typical value of 6.6

Description of key information

The viscosity has been determined in-company using the test method ASTM D-445

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Viscosity:
6.6 mm²/s (static)
at the temperature of:
40 °C

Additional information

The range of the viscosity of the substance at 38.8ºC varies between 5.9 and 8.8 with a typical value of 6.6, in mm2/s

Based on that the viscosity value, measured at 40ºC, is lower than 20,5 mm2/s for a hydrocarbon substance, the substance is classified for aspiration hazard (Asp. Tox. 1, H 304) according to CLP Regulation.
