A study with Brachydanio rerio by Richterich and Muehlberg (2001) was performed for a sodium metasilicate (anhydrous). The 96 h LC50 was determined to be 210 mg/L. In another study (UK Dept. Envir. 1991, Wallen et al. 1957) the toxicity of sodium metasilicate to Gambusia affinis was examined. The 96 h LC50 was determined to be 2320 mg/L.

No studies on aquatic invertebrates and algae are available on sodium metasilicate. Data are read-across to sodium silicate. In a study by Kirch (1997) exposure of Daphnia magna to sodium silicate solutions in a 48 h EC50 of 1700 mg/L. Sodium silicate was tested on the algae Scenedesmus subspicatus (Rieche 1995). The 72 h EC50 based on biomass was 207 mg/L. The EC50 for growth rate was determined as > 345.4 mg/L, the highest concentration tested.

The toxicity of a sodium metasilicate solution to microorganisms has been determined in an activated sludge respiratory inhibition test (Calmels 1994). The 3 h EC50 was > 100 mg/L. In a further study the toxicity to Pseudomonas putida was tested in an oxygen consumption inhibition test. The EC0 was determined to be >1000 mg/L (Richterich and Muehlberg 2001).
