Description of key information

No NOEC available

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Daphnia magna and Leuciscus idus were found to be the most sensitive species both revealing LC50 values >146 mg/L. Silica is found in European rivers in mean concentrations of 7.5 mg SiO2/L (Jorgensen et al. 1991). Therefore, the NOEC for fish in chronic toxicity tests is expected to be comparable to the NOEC for Daphnia and Leuciscus in the short-term tests. Further testing is not appropriate and should be avoided due to animal welfare.
