Additional information

Silica fume is stabile oxidised inorganic substance which may undergo transformation processes in the environment. Abiotic (non-biological) degradation can typically occur by physico-chemical processes such as hydrolysis. Photodegradation of silica is not an important fate process. The speciation of dissolved silica may be different (ionic) if the environmental conditions change to highly alkaline. In highly saturated aquatic solutions dissolved silica starts to form dimers, trimers and may form polymerised silica colloids.
