Description of key information

Appreciable levels of urea are naturally present in the human epidermis.

Additional information

The total content of urea in a 2.5 cm2sample of human skin was measured to be 23 µg (Wellner & Wohlrab, 1992). Tabachnick & Labadie (1970) report the total urea in conventional albino guinea pig epidermis to be 37.7 µmoles/gm wet wt.
