The reported and estimated data on irritation properties of dichloromethane provide equivocal results: dichloromethane is not identified as being a skin and eyes irritant on the basis of its structure in the QSAR model. However, numerous published and peer-reviewed data suggest that dichloromethane may be moderately irritating to skin and eyes.
In accordance with the CLP criteria, skin irritation is defined as “the production of reversible damage to the skin following the application of a test substance for up to 4 hours”.
Eye irritation is defined as “the production of changes in the eye following the application of test substance to the anterior surface of the eye, which are fully reversible within 21 days of application.”.
Based on the data summarised in this section and because of all irritating effects are reported to be reversible, dichloromethane is considered as being a Category 2 skin and eye irritant.
