Chemical structure
Reference substance name:
Slags, ferrous metal, blast furnace
EC Number:
266-002-0
EC Name:
Slags, ferrous metal, blast furnace
Cas Number:
65996-69-2
Molecular formula:
~ Al(n)Ca(m)Mg(o)Si(p)O(3n/2+m+o+2p)
IUPAC Name:
Aluminium-Calcium-Magnesium-Silicium oxide equivalent
Details on test material:
Blast furnace slags can crystallize depending on the chemical composition, pH value and cooling velocity. The structure of the solid liquid is to some extend crystalline, with the minerals embedded in a vitreous matrix. The slower the cooling process, the more crystalline structures will be formed. Slags are very similar to natural rocks, e.g. basalt or granite.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Leachates of cooled blast furnace slags are basic.
Executive summary:

The pH of leachates according to DIN 38414 DEV S4 (100 g/L) of air-cooled blast furnace slags (ABS) is (approximately) 11, and the pH of leachates of granulated blast furnace slags is (approximately) 10.
