Description of key information

OH radical induced indirect photolysis of primary alkyl amines can be estimated with US EPA AOPWIN Program estimating low degradation half-lives (24 hour day and OH radical concentration of 500000 radicales/cm3). Mean value for half-life in air for saturated amines used (OH radical reaction).

In the atmosphere primary alkyl amines are likely to be degraded by reaction with hydroxyl radicals. Degradation rates for some components were calculated with the Atmospheric Oxidation Programme according to Atkinson (1987). With a concentration of 500,000 OH-radicals/cm3, degradation half-lives of 7.9 h for 1-tetradecanamine, 7.1 h for 1-octadecan­amine, and 3.6 resp. 3.4 h for the cis- and trans-isomer of oleylamine are calculated. For the exposure calculations, a mean value for the saturated amines of 7.5 h is used. Because there are no important releases into the atmosphere and volatilisation is expected to be negligible, this removal mechanism is thought to be of low relevance.
