Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No studies of skin or eye irritation are available with concentrated sulphuric acid. Studies performed with diluted sulphuric acid (5% and 10% )provide conflicting results depending on the volume, species, protocol and evaluation criteria and have not been evaluated.

Additional information

Skin irritation

Sulphuric acid is classified for corrosivity as: Category 1A, H314 "Causes severe skin burns and eye damage" according to Annex VI of the CLP Regulation 1272/2008/EC. Specific concentration limits are Skin. Corr. 1A; H314: >= 15%, Skin Irrit. 2; H315: 5% <= to <15%.

No studies of dermal irritation / corrosion have been performed with the substance and none are proposed, based on scientific considerations and for reasons of animal welfare. Regulatory studies performed with 0.5 ml of 10% sulphuric acid indicate that this material is not classified as a skin irritant according to US criteria (summarised in OECD SIDS).

The classification and labelling of sulphuric acid is adequately addressed under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and the hazard has been adequately characterised by the findings of accidental occupational exposures.

Eye irritation

Sulphuric acid is classified for corrosivity as: Category 1A, H314 "Causes severe skin burns and eye damage" according to Annex VI of the CLP Regulation 1272/2008/EC. Specific concentration limits are Eye. Irrit. 2; H319: 5% <= to <15%.

No studies of eye irritation have been performed with the substance and none are proposed, based on scientific considerations and for reasons of animal welfare. Regulatory studies performed with 5% or 10% sulphuric acid are conflicting, depending on the species tested, volume, concentration and evaluation criteria.

The classification and labelling of sulphuric acid is adequately addressed under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 and the hazard has been adequately characterised by the findings of accidental occupational exposures.
