Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Based on read-across to uncoated nano calcium carbonate, bulk calcium carbonate is not acutely toxic to fish, daphnia or algae at levels below its solubility in water.

Additional information

No data are available for bulk calcium carbonate. Three reliable OECD guideline studies are available for uncoated nano calcium carbonate, two of which (fish and Daphnia) were conducted at limit tests of 100% v/v saturated solution. The algal study was conducted at a measured initial test concentration of 14 mg/L, which was the highest concentration that could be achieved. These studies show that the concentration of uncoated nano calcium carbonate that might cause acute toxicity is greater than the highest concentration tested and therefore exceeds the maximum solubility of calcium carbonate in water. On this basis, uncoated nano calcium carbonate is not acutely toxic to aquatic organisms and PNECs for the aquatic compartment have not been derived.

The results from the studies performed with uncoated nano calcium carbonate are directly applicable to bulk calcium carbonate.
