Description of key information

The key study for eye irritation in rabbits was conducted according to OECD Test Guideline 405 and in compliance with GLP. The undiluted test material, tri(isopropyl)silyl acrylate, was found not irritating to rabbit eyes (RCC 2005a).

The key skin irritation study for tri(isopropyl)silyl acrylate in rabbits, conducted according to OECD test guideline 404 and in compliance with GLP, found the undiluted test material to be irritating to rabbit skin (RCC, 2004c). Signs of irritation were seen at the 1, 24, 48 and 72 hour, 7 and 10 day time points, but these had disappeared by the 14 day time point. Scaling, evident from the 72 hour time point, persisted to the end of the observation period. No corrosive effects were noted. The test material was considered to be a Category 2 irritant due to the inflammation that persisted to the end of the 14 day observation period in all animals, specifically scaling.
The key eye irritation study for tri(isopropyl)silyl acrylate in rabbits was conducted according to OECD Test Guideline 405 and in compliance with GLP. The test material was found to be not irritating to rabbit eye (RCC, 2005a). Undiluted test material (0.1ml) was applied to the left eyes of 3 rabbits, with the right eyes serving as controls. Eyes were examined 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours after application. No corrosion of the cornea was evident during the study. Mild, early-onset and transient ocular changes (e.g. corneal opacity, reddening of the conjunctivae and sclerae and chemosis) were seen but these effects were reversible and were no longer evident 48 hours after treatment. No clinical signs of systemic toxicity, no mortality, no staining of the eye, and body weights considered to be within normal range of variability.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Based on available data on skin irritation, the registered substance, tri(isopropyl)silyl acrylate, is classified as Category 2 irritant, H315: 'Causes skin irritation' in accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. The substance is not classified for eye irritation.
