Description of key information

In studies conducted according to the appropriate OECD test guidelines and in compliance with GLP, 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane wasdid not meet the EU criteria for classification as irritant to skin or eyes (Degussa, 1993). Moderate oedema and erythema were observed at the 24, 48 and 72 hour observations. All effects had subsided by Day 17. In the key eye irritation study, minimal conjunctival irritation was observed 1-hour post-instillation, but all effects had subsided by the 24-hour observation.

Additional information

The key studies for skin and eye irritation were selected as the most recent, reliable studies available, conducted according to the appropriate OECD test guidelines and in compliance with GLP. 3 -chloropropyltrimethoxysilane was found to be non-irritant to rabbit skin and eyes according to EU criteria for classification. Other reliable supporting studies confirmed these findings.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Based on the available in vivo skin and eye irritation studies, 3 -chloropropyltrimethoxysilane does not meet the criteria for classification as irritant according to EU Directive 67/548/EEC or Regulation 1272/2008.
