Acute toxicity to fish

A study was carried out according to EU Method C.1, OECD Guideline 203 (Fish, Acute Toxicity Test) and OPPTS 850.1075. In a static limit test Zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio) were exposed to a single test item concentration of 100 mg/L for 96 hours (limit concentration). A concurrent control group was run.

The analytically measured test item concentration remained within ± 20 % of the nominal during the test period. All validity criteria were met. No mortality or sub-lethal effects were observed during the 96-h exposure period either in the treated or in the control group. The 96-h NOEC and LC0 values were determined to be 100 mg/L; the LC50 the LOEC, and LC100 values were determined to be > 100 mg/L.

Acute toxicity to invertebrates

The test item was assessed using Daphnia magna in a study according to EU Method C.2, OECD Guideline 202 (Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test) and OPPTS 850.10.10. In a static limit test young Daphnia were exposed were exposed to a single test item concentration of 100 mg/L for 48 hours (limit concentration). A concurrent control group was run.

The analytically measured test item concentration remained within ± 20 % of the nominal during the test period. All validity criteria were met. There was no immobilisation observed in daphnids exposed to the test item or in the control group. In addition to immobility, no abnormal behaviour or appearance of test animals was noted. The 48-h NOEC was determined to be 100 mg/L and the LOEC, EC100 and the EC50 values were determined to be > 100 mg/L.

Acute toxicity to algae

The effect on algal growth using the unicellular green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata (Selenastrum capricornutum) was assessed over an exposure period of 72 hours according to EU Method C.3, OECD Guideline 201 (Alga, Growth Inhibition Test) and OPPTS 850.5400. In a limit test Algae were exposed to 100 mg/L (limit concentration) for 72 hours over several algal generations.

The measured test item concentration remained within ± 20 % of the nominal over the test period. Statistical analysis showed that that the 0-72 h average specific growth rate and yield in the treatment group (100 mg/L) was not statistically significantly different from the untreated concurrent control. The No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) was determined to be 100 mg/L. As the test item had no significant effect on the growth of algae therefore statistical analysis was not performed to determine the EC values. The 72-h EC50 values based on growth rate and yield were determined to be > 100 mg/L.

Long term toxicity to aquatic organisms

According to REACH Annex IX, column 2, section 9.1.6 and 9.1.5 experimental determination of long term toxicity to fish and aquatic invertebrates were waived, as the substance is considered not hazardous to the environment. There is no need to investigate further the effects on aquatic organisms.

Toxicity to microorganims

A study according to EU Method C.11, OECD Guideline 209 (Activated Sludge, Respiration Inhibition Test) and OPPTS 850.680 was carried out. In a preliminary test the activity of activated sludge was measured at nominal test item concentrations of 10, 100 and 1000 mg/L over a 3-hour period.

Based on measured oxygen consumption values and calculated specific respiration rates it can be stated that the 3-hour EC10 and EC50 values of the test item are greater than 1000 mg/L (limit concentration). The 3-hour NOEC was determined to be 1000 mg/L. No statistical significant differences were observed in the comparison with the blank control values. A definite test was considered not necessary.
