Description of key information

Toxicity to predators via secondary poisoning is not expected for methyl octanoate

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

No avian toxicity data are available for methyl octanoate (CAS No. 111-11-5). According to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006, Annex X, Column 2, 9.6.1, any need for testing for this endpoint should be carefully considered taking into account the large mammalian dataset that is usually available at this tonnage level. Methyl octanoate is readily biodegradable with a low potential for bioaccumulation in biota (see IUCLID section 5.3) and therefore, according to the Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7c, secondary poisoning is unlikely to occur (ECHA, 2008). Moreover, as the substance is not toxic to mammals (not classified for toxicity) no further toxicity testing on birds is deemed necessary.
