Principles of method if other than guideline:
The concentration of the test substance in the influents is determined at the manufacturer's laboratory. The substance concentrations in influent samples are determined by using HPLC joined with Na-ionchange column (analysis conditions: Temperature 75 C; eluent: 0.0001M Na2SO4) using the official method of ICUMSA; Method GS4-22 (2002) "The Determination of Sucrose and Betaine by HPLC in Beet Molasses".

Study design

Details on sampling:
The manufacturer has their own low-rate activated sludge treatment plant. Monitoring of the WWTP is authorised by an environmental permit. The authorised monitoring program includes a sampling plan of influents and effluents. Loading rate of monitoring parameters is based on the composite sample taken once a month. The monitoring parameters are analysed in an accreditated testing laboratory. Sampling is carried out using an automatic sampler which is collecting a composite sample of influent and effluent during a one-day period. In addition, the manufacturer is monitoring process losses from samples taken on working days, and from composite samples taken on weekends. This sampling is carried out using an automatic scheduled composite sampler.

Details on results:
Average flow rates per quarter year are used to determine the loading rates of selected monitoring parameters. Flow rates of influents and effluents are calculated based on flow rate measurements carried out at the same time as sampling. In this study report, the removal efficiency is calculated from loading rates and reported only for selected key parameters.

Removal efficiencies for the selected key parameters are:

CODCr 89 %
BOD7 99 %
Total-N 93 %
N-NH4 95 %

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Waste waters resulting from the manufacturing process of the substance are treated in a low-rate activated sludge treatment plant at the manufacturing site. The treatment plant is continuously monitored, and the operation of the WWTP is covered by an environmental permit. Based on the annual monitoring results, the substance, at average influent concentrations of 0.079 g/l, is not inhibitory to activated sludge microorganisms. Despite the high concentrations of the substance in influents, the waste water treatment plant is functioning well. In addition, nitrogen present in the substance can be efficiently removed during the treatment process. The removal efficiencies are 93% for total nitrogen and 95% for ammonium, respectively. After treatment the effluents can be discharged into the sea.
