Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Inhalation: Inhalation of vapour/mist may result in: asthma.
Ingestion: Exposure may cause nausea, headache and vomiting. Exposure to high levels may cause unconsciousness.
Skin contact: The substance can be absorbed through skin. Defatting to the skin. Prolonged or repeated skin contact may result in: dermatitis.
Eye contact: May cause eye irritation. (redness).
First-air measures
General: Protection of first-aiders: Put on appropriate personal protective equipment. Move exposed person to fresh air. Remove contaminated clothing and shoes.
Inhalation: If inhaled, remove to fresh air. Obtain medical attention if symptoms occur.
Ingestion: If swallowed, rinse mouth with water (only if the person is conscious). Seek medical attention.
Skin contact: Wash with soap and water. Take off immediately all contaminated clothing and wash clothing. Obtain medical attention if symptoms occur.
Eye contact: Rinse with plenty of running water. Obtain medical attention if symptoms occur.
First aid facilities: No special recommendations.
Fire-fighting measures
Small fire:
Suitable: Use dry chemical or CO2.
Large fire:
Suitable: Use water, foam or dry chemical powder.
Unusual fire/explosion hazards: Vapour is explosive in air at temperatures higher than the flash point.
Hazardous thermal decomposition products: In case of fire, may produce hazardous decomposition products such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide.
Special fire-fighting procedures: Fire water contaminated with this material must be contained and prevented from being discharged to any waterway, sewer or drain.
Protection of fire-fighters: Wear suitable protective clothing, self-contained breathing apparatus.
Accidental release measures
Environmental precautions: Prevent entry into sewers, basements or confined areas. Dyke if necessary.
Clean-up methods
Small spill and leak: Take up with suitable material. Place in a suitable container. Clean up affected area with a large amount of water.
Large spill and leak: Prevent entry into sewers, basements or confined areas. Dyke if necessary. Absorb spill with inert material (e.g. dry sand or earth) and place in a chemical waste container. Recycle, if possible. Use explosion-proof electrical (ventilating, lighting and material handling) equipment. Keep away from sources of ignition.
Handling and storage
Storage: Store in a fireproof location. Keep away from incompatible materials and avoid specific conditions. The substance oxidizes on exposure to air. May form explosive peroxides. Store under nitrogen. Keep away from sources of ignition - No smoking. Tank openings should be inspected frequently, since benzoic acid can form, clogging the vent openings.
Remarks: This substance can ignite spontaneously when finely dispersed over large areas. The product should be handled with the care usual when dealing with chemicals.
Packaging materials
Suitable: Steel with synthetic lining or polyethylene containers.
Not suitable: Iron, copper, bronze, aluminium.
