Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
13 AUG 2009 - 11 JAN 2010
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
reference to same study
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
other: UN N.1
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

In the preliminary screening test, the test substance melted when approached by the ignition flame. A burning of the substance was not observed. No further testing was required.

Interpretation of results:
other: EU GHS criteria not met
Conclusions:
In the preliminary screening test, the test substance melted when approached by the ignition flame. A burning of the substance was not observed. No further testing was required.
Executive summary:

The flammability properties of the test item were assessed during a GLP-study according to UN Test N.1. In the preliminary screening test, the test substance melted when approached by the ignition flame. A burning of the substance was not observed. No further testing was required. The test item is classified as no readily combustible solid.

Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the organic substance does not contain metals or metalloids and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied

Description of key information

Flammability:

The flammability properties of the test item were assessed during a GLP-study according to UN Test N.1. In the preliminary screening test, the test substance melted when approached by the ignition flame. A burning of the substance was not observed. No further testing was required. The test item is classified as no readily combustible solid.

Flammability, contact with water:

The study is scientifically not necessary, because the substance is known to be soluble in water to form a stable mixture.

Flammability, pyrophoric solids:

The study is scientifically not necessary, because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days).

Flammability, self-heating substances:

The auto flammability of the sample was assessed in a GLP-study according to EU Method A.16. In the preliminary screening test, the test substance melted when approached by the ignition flame (exothermic events detected up to 400 °C). No final conclusion can be drawn, but the substance is expected to exhibit no self-heating properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test substance could not be ignited with a flame during 2 minutes exposure to the hot flame of a propane burner in the preliminary test.

The main test is unnecessary, because no ignition was observed. The test substance is not a readily combustible solid in the sense of Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method A.10 and Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.

Based on the water solubility, the behaviour in contact with air and the behaviour during heating up to 400 °C, the substance has neither to be classified as flammable in contact with air, nor as pyrophoric solid, nor as self-heating substance.
