Description of key information

Ethyl vinyl ether is readily biodegradable without fulfilling the 10-day window criterion

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Ethyl vinyl ether is readily biodegradable without fulfilling the 10 -day window criterion as indicated by a study according to ISO guideline 14593 (CO2 Headspace Test) investigating the ready biodegradability of the analogous substance isobutyl vinyl ether.

The read-across is suitable because the substance has the same functional groups and a comparable moelcular structure and size, according to SIDS Initial Assessment Profile 23, 17-20 October 2006.

Isobutyl vinyl ether was degraded by 60 -70 % after 28 days while the 10 -day window was slightly failed (59% within 10 -day window). A study according to OECD guideline 302B demonstrated that ethyl vinyl ether is easily eliminated from water mainly by stripping (BASF AG, 1979). Hence, Ethyl vinyl ether was not testet in a OECD 301 series test as its very high volatility might have caused problems even in closed systems.
