Description of key information

No data are available on the toxicity of biphenyl-4,4'-diol to birds.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

This data point has been waived on the grounds that direct and/or indirect contamination of the terrestrial compartnment is unlikely and that primary exposure of terrestrial vertebrates to biphenyl-4,4'-diol is therefore not expected to occur. Moreover, the log Kow of biphenyl-4,4'-diol is less than 3.0, indicating that its bioconcentration potential is negligible and there is consequently no significant risk of secondary poisoning via earthworms or fish. Under these circumstances, studies to provide endpoints for the avian toxicity of biphenyl-4,4'-diol are considered to be both unnecessary and inappropriate on ethical grounds.
