Executive summary:

A GLP compliant OECD 201 algal inhibition assay (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) with 4,4 -biphenol was conducted with confirmation of test solution concentrations at 0 and 72 hours. The test was conducted at nominal concentrations of Control, solvent control, 0.05, 0.11, 0.23, 0.48, 1.0, 2.2, 4.7 and 10 mg/L the concentration range was based on the results of a range finding test.

The results were based on initial measured concentrations at 0 hours: 0.0552, 0.122, 0.254, 0.530, 1.11, 2.46, 5.25 and 11.1 mg/L, equivalent to 110, 111, 110, 110, 111, 112, 112 and 111% of nominal.

The cell concentration in a control and solvent control increased 299 times, and therefore showed normal growth under the test conditions. Based on initial measured concentrations at 0 hours the lowest test endpoint was determined to be the 72 -hour ErC50 of 2.15 mg/L. The 72 -hour ErC50 (based on growth rate) was determined to be 7.73 mg/L.

The lowest test 72 -hour NOEC was determined to 0.53 mg/L, based on biomass. The 72 -hour NOEC based on growth rate was determined to be 2.46 mg/L.

Description of key information

The test was conducted in accordance with GLP and an international test guideline (OECD 201). The test species was Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and the 72h-EC50 and NOEC values of 7.73 and 0.53 mg/L were based on growth rate as requited by the ECHA endpoint specific guidance.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
7.73 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
0.53 mg/L
