Description of key information
According to the available literature the water solubilty of formaldehyde is ca 550 g/L at 20 °C
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Water solubility:
- 550 g/L
- at the temperature of:
- 20 °C
Additional information
Ten individual sources were identified containing information on the water solubility of formaldehyde.
According to the Merck Index (2013) formaldehyde is soluble up to 55 % at 20 °C.
According to the Publication of Pickrell (1983), the RömppChemie database (2015) and the online Knovel data-base (2012), the solubility of formaldehyde in water is 400 g/L at 20 °C
According to the Ullmanns encyclopydia (2012) formaldehyde can dissolve in water up to 95 v% at a temperature of 120 °C. At room temperature, pure aqueous solutions contain formaldehyde in the form of methylene glycol HOCH2OH [463-57-0] and its oligomers.
According to the CRC (2010) handbook, Hawley’s chemical dictionary (2012), and the Gestis (2015) online database, formaldehyde is soluble or freely soluble in water.
According to the Kirk-Othmer (2015) online encyclopedia, as well as the Verschueren (2001) handbook formaldehyde is miscible at 25 °C.
Based on these data the water solubility of formaldehyde is determined to be 550 g/L at 20 °C.
