In a safety test, ca. 3 mL of the test item nicotine were heated in a test tube with a Bunsen burner to the boiling temperature (approximately 270 °C). Thereby, the light yellowish colour became stronger. After cooling down, no further changes of the test item were observed.

In the following pre-test and main study, about 70 mL of the liquid test item nicotine were used, respectively. Each determination was performed with a fresh aliquot of the test item.

The following program parameters were applied:

pre-test

8.5 °C/min

every 5 °C

main study

5.5 °C/min

starting 22 °C below expected flash point

Conclusions:
The flash point corresponds to the mean value of two determinations and amounts to 111.0 ± 0.5 °C (384.2 ± 0.5 K). The difference between the two measured values was below 2 °C. For this reason, the determination is considered valid.
Executive summary:

First, a safety test was performed: ca. 3 mL of the test item nicotine were heated to the boiling point of approximately 270 °C. Thereby, the light yellowish colour became more intensive, but no signs of polymerisation or decomposition were observed.

Then, a pre-test and a main study with two experiments were performed with a flash point tester.

The flash point of nicotine is stated as 111.0 ± 0.5 °C (384.2 ± 0.5 K).

This value is the mean of two independent determinations.
