Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Skin irritation:

The submitted study on skin irritation has been tested with menthone/isomenthone racemic, representing the two main components of the registered reaction mass (up to 90%). The test substance has been identified to be a skin irritant under the chosen testing conditions.

Overall based on the present data, the reaction mass is considered to have skin irritating properties. Other components of the reaction mass do not have an impact on the classification of this reaction mass due to its concentrations and/or hazard profile.

Eye irritation:

The submitted studies on eye irritation have been tested with isopulegol and l-menthol (present in the reaction mass up to 8% and 5%, respectively), representing two minor components of the registered reaction mass. Both substances have been determined to be irritating to the eye. (+) neo-menthol (present in the reaction mass up to 2%) is a stereoisomer of l-menthol and due to its high structural similarity, its eye irritating potential can be considered comparable.

Overall, since the components mentioned above may constitute in sum 10% or more, the reaction mass is considered to have eye irritating properties. The two main components of the reaction mass do not have an impact on the classification of this reaction mass due to its hazard profile, i.e. absence of eye irritating potential.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The present data fulfill the criteria laid down in 67/548/EEC and regulation (EU) 1272/2008, and a classification "irritating to skin" (R38) and "skin irritant" (category 2) is warranted.

The present data on eye irritation fulfill the criteria laid down in regulation (EU) 1272/2008. Therefore, a classification "eye irritant" (category 2) is warranted.
