In order to assess the acute toxicity to fish, experimental data are available for the source substance CAS 75-56-9.

A GLP-compliant guideline study (EPA-660/3-75-009) is available for propylene oxide, reporting a 96 h LC50 value of 52 mg/L in the freshwater species Salmo gairdneri (new name: Oncorhynchus mykiss) (Shell Research Ltd., 1986). The only saltwater species reported is the common mullet (Mugil cephalus) which shows a similar sensitivity to the freshwater species, having a 96 h LC50 of 89 mg/L (Crews, 1974). Therefore, based on the available read-across data for the structurally similar substance CAS 75 -56 -9, it can be concluded that ethylene is with hight probability acutely harmful to fish.
