Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Serious inhibition of growth was observed at recalculated levels of 700 mg phosphonic acid per kg soil dw. No EC50 could be derived.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

A range of studies is available studying the effects of phosphite (H2PO3-) on plant growth. This is related to the potential fertilizing and fungicidal effect of the test substance.

Growth reduction was observed in young mandarin trees and in maize plants when treated with phosphite at dose rates equalling P-fertiliser levels. Foliar application caused leave burn whereas in general an abnormal habitus was observed. The effect of phosphite was less pronounced or absent when the nutritional status of the tree was optimal, in other words, when the plant did not need phosphite as a source of P.
