Two studies on skin sensitisation are available for maleic acid. Maleic acid was sensitising in a guinea pig maximisation test as well as in a local lymph node assay.

According to the results of the studies available maleic acid has to be classified as "R43 May cause sensitisation by skin contact" / "Skin sensitisation Category 1".
