Description of key information

Adsorption/desorption (guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, chapter R.7a: endpoint specific guidance, May 2008, ECHA). The octanol-water partition coefficient log Pow of the maleic acid is –1.3, see IUCLID section 4.7. The experimental study to determine the adsorption coefficient is therefore not necessary, as the low potential for adsorption to surfaces can be predicted.

According to Annex VIII of REACH, the "study does not need to be conducted if – based on the physicochemical properties the substance can be expected to have a low potential for adsorption (e.g. the substance has a low octanol-water partition coefficient)". "In practice a cut-off value for log Kow of 3 can be applied for adsorption potential." (from the ECHA guidance).

The octanol-water partition coefficient log Pow of the test substance is –1.3, see IUCLID section 4.7. The experimental study to determine the adsorption coefficient is therefore not necessary, as the low potential for adsorption to surfaces can be predicted.
