Toxicity of cresols to the terrestrial compartment is hardly investigated. Only data on terrestrial plants are available. In a guideline study the effect of o-cresol and m-cresol on germination and growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) was investigated. After an exposure period of 14 days EC50 values ranging between 233 mg/kg dw soil and more than 242 mg/kg dw soil were found in standard soil.
Comparison of the PNECsoil and the expected exposure of cresols to the soil indicate that there is no unacceptable risk to the terrestrial compartment (PEC/PNEC < 1). Since no risk is expected from the amount of cresols that end up in the environment no further studies on terrestrial toxicity (i.e. earthworms, arthropods, microorganisms, birds) are required. Due to the low bioaccumulation potential of cresols, an accumulation of the substances in the food chain is not expected and thus secondary poisoning by predatory animals can be excluded.
