Description of key information

No data on chronic terrestrial toxicity are available. However, the substance is not persistent in the soil compartment. The equilibrium partitioning method has been used for assessing the hazard to soil organisms.

There are no data available concerning toxicity of styrene to soil microorganisms. However no test is proposed to cover this endpoint for the following reasons: Aerobic microorganisms may cause extensive or complete destruction of styrene in soil, even if it is added at quite high concentrations(Fu & Alexander, 1977). This indicates that soil microorganisms may have a high tolerance to styrene.

In the case of readily biodegradable substances which are not applied to soil it is generally assumed that the substance will not enter the terrestrial environment and as such there is no need for additional testing on soil organisms. Styrene is not a strong adsorptive substance, is volatile and rapidly degraded in the air via photo oxidation, so that an indirect soil exposure via STP sludge and aerial deposition is considered to be not relevant. Furthermore, the equilibrium partitioning method can be used for assessing the hazard of soil organisms from data on aquatic organisms.
