Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Toxicity data from standard toxicity tests indicate that micro-and nanosized TiO2 materials are not toxic to soil organisms including microbes, plants and invertebrates up to at least 1000 mg/kg dw soil.

Additional information

Microsized TiO2:

Chronic NOEC values are available for the effect of upgraded ilmenites (UGI, > 80% TiO2) on plants (barley and lettuce), arthropods (Folsomia candida) and soil microorganisms (nitrification). The NOEC values for soil arthropods and soil microorganisms were 1000 mg/kg dw and 10,000 mg/kg dw. An unbounded NOEC of ≥ 100,000 was determined for plants.

Regarding the toxicity of microsized TiO2 particles, chronic data are available on standard tests with annelids and plants with unbounded NOEC values of ≥ 1000 mg/kg dw.

Nanosized TiO2:

For TiO2-NP, chronic data are available from standard tests with annelids, plants and microbes with unbounded NOEC values ranging from ≥ 1000 mg/kg dw to ≥ 100000 mg/kg dw.

Thus, toxicity data from standard toxicity tests indicate that micro-and nanosized TiO2 materials are not toxic to soil organisms including microbes, plants and invertebrates up to at least 1000 mg/kg dw soil.
