Description of key information

Melts to a glass at very high temperature.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Melting / freezing point at 101 325 Pa:
1 713 °C

Additional information

Silicon dioxide (silica gel and other forms) has a very high melting point - varying depending on what the particular structure is, but around 1700°C. Very strong silicon-oxygen covalent bonds have to be broken throughout the structure before melting occurs.
