No results have been located on effects of ferrosilicon on aquatic plants.
FeSi grades are poorly water soluble alloys, even if the true water solubility values have not been determined by testing. The rate and extent to which FeSi alloys can produce soluble (bio)available ionic and other metal-bearing species in the various test media is basically known and need to be taken into account in considering aquatic testing. There are relatively good information available of metal ions released from the FeSi grades in different test media at pH 1.5-7.4 in 7 days. These results indicate hardly any effects at the level of 100 mg/l load, but this has not been demonstrated. At higher load levels the soluble fraction might be remarkable higher, depending on method of preparing the test solution (particle size, pH and contact time).

Conclusion: To fulfill the standard information requirement, a standard algae testing (OECD 201/C.3 algae test) is proposed for FeSi-grades (< 1 mm and < 0.05 µm if relevant) up to load of 1000 mg/l.
