Description of key information

The sensitivity of sodium hypochlorite to (sun)light is high: under environmentally relevant conditions half life is between 12 min at pH 8 (OCl-) and 60 min at pH 5 (HOCl).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The sensitivity of sodium hypochlorite to (sun)light is known for long and producers and users use to protect solutions from light. More quantitatively, a study has been published (Nowell & Hoigné, 1992) that shows that, under environmentally relevant conditions half life is between 12 min at pH 8 (OCl-) and 60 min at pH 5 (HOCl) (initial concentrations in the range 13-18 mg TRC / L.)
