The density of heavy fuel oil components ranges from 840 to 1100 Kg/m³ at 15°C (CONCAWE 2010a).

A density value of 950 to 1010 kg/m³ reported at 15 °C was determined in a reliable study (CONCAWE, 1998) conducted according to ISO 3675 Hydrometer method or ISO 12185 Oscillating U-tube method. Although the experimental result was not conducted by a GLP study, it is still comparable to a guideline study with minor restrictions only. The result is adequate for assessment and suitable for key study.

Three of the studies (Mackay & Zargoski 1982, EETD 1988.009, ESD 1990.010) have reported 0.97 to 0.98 g/cm3at 20°C in a secondary source (Environment Canada database) but no further information is available. A density value of c.a. 0.95 g/cm3 is reported from a chemical handbook (TPHCWG 1998) but no measured temperature is reported.

Studies (various HPV 2004.002-6) have also recorded a specific gravity value of c.a. 0.85 to c.a. 1.1 in the HPV dossier. The original reference was not available for review and no further information is available.
