Description of key information

From the available test data for the substance and its structurally similar compound in combination with the reliable QSAR calculation it can be concluded, that the substance is with high probability acutely not harmful to algae

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Since no experimental data are available for the test substance, read-across approach with two structurally similar substances was performed. The experimental data on the toxicity for aquatic algae are available for two structurally similar substances ethylene glycol (CAS 107 -21 -1) and pentaethylene glycol (CAS 4792 -15 -8).

The key study according to OECD guideline 201 is availablefor pentaethylene glycol. In this study the green algae Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata was exposed for 72 hours in a limit test with a test concentration of 100 mg/L. No effects on the growth rate of the algae were determined (Mead & McKenzie, 2003 – cited in OECD SIDS, 2004).

For ethylene glycol a further study with Selenastrum capricornutum is available, which was conducted according to EPA standards. After 96 hours of exposure an EC50 value of 6500-13000 mg/L is reported (Dow, 1982).

These results are supported with the estimated value for the test substance itself, wich was derived for the test substance itself from a valid QSAR model (ECOSAR v2.0; BASF SE, 2022). The 72 -h EC50 for the substance was predicted to be 20518 mg/L.The calculated chronic value (ChV) for 2 ,2'-(ethylenedioxy)diethanol is 2486 mg/L.The substance was within the applicability domain of the model.

From the available estimated test data for the substance and the availbale experimental data for its structurally similar compounds it can be concluded, that the substance is with high probability acutely not harmful to algae
