Description of key information

Acute toxicity of adipic acid to fish (Danio rerio) was assessed in a static bioassay according to a national standard method. After 96 hours of exposure, a LC0 of > 1000 mg/L was obtained (Bayer, 1991).

Adipic acid was tested with respect to the acute toxicity towards invertebrates (Dapnia magna) in a static test yielding in an 48 h-EC50 of 46 mg/L (MITI, 1997).

Concerning the toxicity to algae, the fresh water alga Pseudokirchnerella subcapitata was exposed to adipic acid for 72 hours. The experiment was conducted according to OECD Guideline 201 (Alga, Growth Inhibition Test). The test gave a 72h-EC50 value for effects on growth rate of 59 mg/L and a 72h-EC10 of 41 mg/L (MITI, 1997).

The long-term toxicity test of adipic acid towards aquatic invertebrates (Dapnia magna) was investigated in a reproduction test according OECD Guideline 211. After 21 days of exposure a NOEC-reproduction of 6.3 mg/L was determined (MITI, 1997). To assess the toxicity towards microorganisms, a respiratory inhibition test with activated sludge was performed. After 3 h an EC50 and an EC10 of higher than 100 mg/L, respectively, and a NOEC >= 100 mg/L was observed. (Currenta, 2019).

Additional information

Adipic acid is a weak to medium strong acid and partly dissociates in water causing a pH shift (pKa1: 4.34; pKa2: 5.44). The tolerance of water organisms towards pH is diverse. Recommended pH values for test species listed in OECD guidelines are between 6 and 9.
