Description of key information

Some epidemiological data were available.

Additionally, a clinical case study, some cases of poisoning incidents and one data on human sensitisation were reported.

Additional information

Several studies were available regarding human exposure, however they were generally of poor quality due to a general lack of information on concentration monitored, on subject details and on study design.

The clinical investigation conducted by Gloemme and Lundgren (1957) was used by the ACGIH (2001) to set the threshold limit value TLV-TWA of Chlorine dioxide. However, this investigation does not properly describe and justify the recruitment procedure of the workers. Moreover the characterization of exposure is not adequate as atmospheric concentrations were not monitored continuously. Finally, consideration of bias and confounding factors is not done and statistics could not be applied as the workers number is too low. This study was therefore disregarded and was not used for health assessment.
