Description of key information

The NOEC for m-xylene, p-xylene and ethylbenzene are 1.17, 1.57 and, 0.96 respectively. The lowest result is a 7 day NOEC of 0.96 mg/L for ethylbenzene.

The estimated NOELR values from TLM QSAR are 1.672 - 2.122 mg/L.

The experimental value was used for chemical safety assessment.

Additional information

Chronic aquatic invertebrate ecotoxicity studies are available, with ethylbenzene, m- and p-xylene as the test substances. Niederlehner et al (1998) investigated the effects of m-xylene and ethylbenzene on Ceriodaphnia dubia reproduction over 7 days. The NOEC of 0.96 mg/L from Niederlehner et al (1998) for chronic toxicity of ethylbenzene to invertebrates was taken by Environment Canada as the critical toxicity value for ethylbenzene toxicity to aquatic species in the Draft Screening Assessment Report (Environment Canada 2014). Bjornestad et al (2005) investigated the effects of p-xylene on Daphnia magna reproduction over 21 days following OECD 211. Both studies included analytical confirmation of the exposure concentrations.

The three reported NOECs from studies are similar, 0.96 mg/L (ethylbenzene) 1.17 mg/L (m-xylene) and 1.57 mg/L (p-xylene). Ethylbenzene’s NOEC will be used as it is the most conservative.

A TLM modeling framework was used to support values derived experimentally. The estimated NOELR values from TLM QSAR were 1.672 - 2.122 mg/L.
