Description of key information

Values for LEL: 2, 2.0, 2.2%. and 2.1 to 2.5%
Values for UEL: 11.5% consistently reported in the range 10.2 to 12%

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
highly flammable

Additional information

Based on consideration of the structure and experience in handling and use of this substance, ethyl acetate is expected to be non-pyrophoric and non-flammable on contact with water.

Justification for classification or non-classification

A number of sources report values for the explosive limits of ethyl acetate. A small range of values are available for the lower explosive limit. A figure of 2.2% is consistently reported, including from a reliable source. This represents approximately the mid point of cited values. The figure of 11.5% is consistenly reported apart from a range of values with 11.5% as a maximum, which is cited in a handbook that reports data from manufacturers. A figure of 11.5% is used as the key value for the UEL based on a conservative approach and the fact that this is cited in a reliable source.
