Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2010-07-19
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study with acceptable restrictions
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
Principles of method if other than guideline:
not reported
GLP compliance:
no
Test procedure:
burning time (test type not further specified)
Remarks:
or specified in description of method (migrated information)
Burning time:
0 s
Remarks on result:
other: The test substance could not be ignited.

During the preliminary screening test the test substance couldn't be ignited by a gas flame. According to the definition in the EEC-directive 92/69/EEC, method A.10. the test item Fatty acids C16 -18, CAS 67701-03-5 is not considered as flammable.

Interpretation of results:
GHS criteria not met
Endpoint:
substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
Endpoint:
pyrophoric solids
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
Endpoint:
self-heating substances / mixtures
Data waiving:
study scientifically not necessary / other information available
Justification for data waiving:
the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is completely molten at 160°C

Description of key information

Flammability: not a flammable solid (EU method A.10.)
no pyrophoricity
no flammability on contact with water

not self-heating

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
non flammable

Additional information

During the preliminary screening test the test substance couldn't be ignited by a gas flame.

Therefore the substance is considered not to be a flammable solid.

Based on experience in handling and use and the chemical structure pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not to be expected.

The substance is not self-heating. It is completely molten at 160 °C.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification:

Based on experimental result the substance is considered not to be a flammable solid.

Based on the chemical structure and experience in handling and use, pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not expected.

Based on the melting point < 160 °C, the substance is not self-heating.
