Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Description of key information

Several reliable and GLP-conform studies (Klimisch 1 and 2) are available for the effect of V2O5 flakes, NaVO3 and (NH4)V3O8 on the biomass and growth rate of several freshwater algae species, including Ankistrodesmus falcatus, Desmodesmus subspicatus, Navicula pelliculosa, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata and Scenedesmus quadricauda. Studies were performed according to standard test guidelines, OECD 201 or Environment Canada EPS 1 RM/25. Results for growth rate are preferred for the effects assessment, and EC10 values are preferred over NOECs in accordance with ECHA Guidance on IR & CSA, R.10 (2008). The 72-h ErC50 values for growth rate range from 2,907 µg V/L for Desmodesmus subspicatus (Mitterer, 1999; V2O5) to 8,000 µg V/L for Navicula pelliculosa (Wenzel, 2017). Respective ErC10 values range from 270 µg V/L (S. quadricauda; Schiffer and Liber, 2017) to 5,720 µg V/L(N. pelliculosa; Wenzel, 2017).

The lowest 72-h ErC50 of 2907 µgV/L was observed for the growth rate of green alga Desmodesmus subspicatus with V2O5 flakes (Mitterer, 1999; Klimisch 2) whereas the lowest 72-h ErC10 of 270 µg/L was determined in a study with NaVO3 for the growth rate of Scenedesmus quadricauda (Schiffer and Liber, 2017; Klimisch 2). All results are based on total dissolved V concentrations.

Reliable data are not available for the toxicity of vanadium substances to marine algae.
