Description of key information

The pour point for residual aromatic extracts is >20°C

Additional information

For UVCBs such as petroleum substances the conventional melting point is not adequate to describe the physical phase or flow characteristics. The pour point is hence better suited. The pour point is the lowest temperature at which movement of the test material is observed under conditions specified in the test protocol. The pour point test also measures a “no flow” point, which is the temperature of the test material at which a wax crystal structure and/or viscosity increase such that movement of the surface of the test specimen is impeded under the conditions specified in the test protocol. Because not all petroleum products contain wax in their composition, the pour point determination encompasses change in physical state (i.e., wax crystal formation) and/or viscosity.

The measured pour point for residual aromatic extracts is >20°C (CONCAWE, 1992a).
