Justification for type of information:
In accordance with section 1.5 of REACH Annex XI, the study does not need to be performed as based on chemical structure pyrophoric properties are not to be expected.
Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
17 July 2009 to 30 July 2009
Reliability:
1 (reliable without restriction)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: see 'Remark'
Remarks:
Study conducted in compliance with agreed protocols, with no or minor deviations from standard test guidelines and/or methodological deficiencies, which do not affect the quality of the relevant results. The study report was conclusive and done to a valid guideline.

During the preliminary screening test, the pile failed to ignite during the two minutes that the Bunsen flame was applied. The negative results of the screening test negated the need to perform the main test.

Interpretation of results:
other: Not classified according to EU criteria.
Conclusions:
Manganese dioxide was found to be non-flammable in the preliminary screening tests. It was deemed unecessary to perform further tests.
Executive summary:

The flammability of the test material was determined in a study which was conducted in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10.

During the preliminary screening test, the pile failed to ignite during the two minutes that the Bunsen flame was applied. The negative results of the screening test negated the need to perform the main test. The test material was therefore determined to be non-flammable under the conditions of the test.

Description of key information

Additional information

Flammability (Solids)

The flammability of the test material was determined in a study which was conducted in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10.

During the preliminary screening test, the pile failed to ignite during the two minutes that the Bunsen flame was applied. The negative results of the screening test negated the need to perform the main test. The test material was therefore determined to be non-flammable under the conditions of the test.

Pyrophoric properties

In accordance with section 1.5 of REACH Annex XI, the study does not need to be performed as based on chemical structure pyrophoric properties are not to be expected.

Flammability in contact with water

In accordance with section 1.5 of REACH Annex XI, the study does not need to be performed as based on chemical structure water reactivity is not to be expected.

Justification for classification or non-classification

In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008, the substance does not require classification with respect to flammability.

In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex VI, Directive 67/548/EEC (DSD), the substance does not require classification with respect to flammability.
