Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The 48-hour EL50 was 27 mg/L for Resin acids and rosin acids, hydrogenated, Me esters. This result is read across to lo molecular weight members of the category.
For higher molecular weight category members the EL50 was determined to be greater than the highest loading rate in all studies. The 48-hour EL50 for higher molecular weight category members is determined to be >100 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Based on the available ecotoxicity data, differences in ecotoxicity were observed between low molecular weight and high molecular weight category members. Therefore, for environmental classification purposes, data for low molecular weight substances is used to classify the two low molecular weight esters (methyl esters) and data for high molecular weight category members is used to classify higher molecular weight esters.

Low molecular weight substances

A GLP-compliant study following OECD Guideline 202 was conducted for Resin acids and rosin acids, hydrogenated, Me esters (Inveresk, 2001c). As the test item is poorly soluble, testing was conducted using water accommodated fractions. There was no analytical verification of test concentrations and results are expressed as nominal loading rates. The EL50 from this study was 27 mg/L. The results from this study are read across to the substance Resin acids and rosin acids, Me esters for classification purposes.

High molecular weight substances

Three reliable studies are available for higher molecular weight esters within this category. Studies are available for Resin acids and rosin acids esters with glycerol, Resin acids and rosin acids esters with pentaerythritol and Resin acids and rosin acids esters with ethylene glycol. All studies are GLP-compliant and followed OECD guideline 202 (Inveresk 2001d; Harlan Laboratories, 2010a and 2014b). The test solutions were prepared as water accommodated fractions (WAF) in the studies. For the studies with Resin acids and rosin acids, esters with glycerol and Resin acids and rosin acids, esters with ethylene glycol analytical verification of test concentrations was carried out. However, given that toxicity cannot be attributed to a single component or a mixture of components but to the test item as a whole the results were based on nominal loading rates only. The study using Resin acids and rosin acids, esters with pentaerythritol did not have analytical verification of test concentrations and results are expressed as nominal loading rates. In all studies the EL50 was determined to be greater than the highest concentration tested.
