Description of key information

There is one long-term study on effects of cumene on Daphnia magna available performed according to OECD 211/Draft and conducted under GLP. The effects on reproduction of D. magna were studied under static renewal conditions in sealed flasks. Mean measured concentrations were used for the evaluation. The NOEC was 0.35 mg/L.

The data on long-term toxicity of cumene in aquatic invertebrates is presented in EU RAR (2001) in Section 3.2.1.1 (Aquatic compartment (incl. Sediment), page 25ff).

There is one long-term study on effects of cumene on Daphnia magna available performed according to OECD 211/Draft and conducted under GLP. The effects on reproduction of D. magna were studied under static renewal conditions in sealed flasks. Mean measured concentrations were used for the evaluation.

The 21 day LC50 based on mortality of adults was > 3.0 mg/L. Production of offspring in the treated groups indicated that cumene had an effect on the reproduction at concentrations greater than 0.35 mg/L.

The study is classified as acceptable and valid and satisfies the guideline requirements for a chronic toxicity study with freshwater invertebrates. Measurements of body length of parents, observation of presence of males or ephippia were not conducted as required in the current guideline. However, as the reported NOEC for reproduction could be confirmed by QSAR modelling (EU RAR 2001 using equation of TGD Part III => EC50 0.32 mg/L), it is concluded that the NOEC of 0.35 mg/L can be used for the assessment of long-term risk for aquatic invertebrates.
